Ten Years of Thank You
October 27, 2011 | 09:31 AM

Mr Card, this article was the perfect opportunity for me to say a long overdue "thank you" for the many years of enjoyment your various columns have given me. I don't always agree with what you have to say (and indeed we have occasionally clashed in these feedback sections), but I always enjoy it, even on the odd occasion when I'm grinding my teeth. That, surely, must be the mark of a great writer - someone whose writings one can enjoy, even when sometimes disagreeing vehemently with the writer's message.

It is also interesting what you say about your columns making you more a citizen of Greensboro. I have never been to the US, let alone visited Greensboro, and I can assure you that even your reviews of places I have never seen (and probably never will) still make for an interesting read, evocative and diverse as they are. In fact, it would not be too much of a stretch to say that your columns have, to an extent, also made quasi-citizens of Greensboro out of those who read them from further afield.

I think your columns also give fans of your fictional writing (of which I am definitely one) an insight into someone who is something of a hero to them (that would be you), and in a far less self-indulgent way than can be the case with many writers' blogs. So for that, also, I thank you.

Here's to many more years of your columns. And occasional teeth-grinding on my part (we "Brits" have terrible teeth anyway, right?).

Al Goodwin
