Yes, we make decisions of this type based on whether they benifit society or not when there is a cost to society. Renewing the population and providing a stable environment for the development of new members of society (not to mention all of the cultural and evolutionary baggage we are carrying) is a justification for the special privilages accorded married couples. You can argue that traditional marriages do not deserve these privilages but you can't equate homosexual marriage with heterosexual and claim the same privilages without showing a similiar benifit to society.
As for why you should pay taxes to educate children, it is so you can enjoy the benifits of an educated, affluant, stable society.
