An informative and well-researched piece (unlike Mr Card's savaging of JK Rowling elsewhere on this site, where any meritorious argument is lost amongst the unwarranted vitriol).
But in this piece, the vitriol seems to be warranted - the lack of foresight and sensible action from those whom we elect to foresee and act is staggering.
You may or may not take some comfort from the fact that the US is not the only culprit - the European Union has long been shifting its own subsidy-induced surplus at knock-down rates to the poorer nations, and is now similarly re-focusing on biofuels. It will be interesting (in a macabre sort of way) to see whther it is the free market-worshipping US that responds first / best to the foreign blood on its hands, or the meddlesome, over-regulating EU. (The EU may pretend to preserve and promote the "free movement" of goods etc, but when it has to be backed up by a plethora of legislative action, it's hardly "free", is it?)
As an aside, whatever your views on climate change, in this instance it can be deployed as a weapon on your side - or would you see that as a breach of the Hague Convention?!
As a further aside, hailing as I do from a land in which "Eurocrats" has long been common parlance, may I proffer "Congrats" as a term? It has both the irony of offering felicitations on your latest electoral disaster, and the suitably rodent-like feel that seems to be required.
