School Salaries Still The Same

The most startling aspect of the Guilford County Schools salary list is that at the top it is nearly identical to the 2011 list.

Not only has no one gotten a raise, but in the top five no one has retired, resigned or been fired.

Number seven on the 2011 list, Northern Regional Superintendent John Modest, is no longer with the school system. Otherwise, the only change until number 15 is that the figures were rounded differently, so there is a dollar difference from the year before on some salaries.

School Superintendent Mo Green is still number one at $250,000, which puts him as the highest paid government employee on the salary lists that we print, unless Guilford County Manager Brenda Jones Fox sneaks a $100,000 raise for herself on to the Board of Commissioners next consent agenda.

The schools have not snuck around and figured out how to pay their employees more money without giving them "raises." Nor have they added titles that allowed them to say someone had been promoted when they really hadn't. In short, the schools said nobody got a raise, and as near as we can figure the schools are telling the truth.

The highest paid employee with "teacher" in the title is Phillip Hampton, who is listed as a teacher with the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) at a salary of $79,899. Second is teacher and athletic director Russell Lee who is paid $77,620 a year.

The highest paid teacher who is not an ROTC instructor or an athletic director is Karen Carroll, who is listed as a teacher of English and social studies at a salary of $71,060 a year. It is important to realize that teachers are paid for a 10-month work year. So to compare a teacher's salary to a 12 month salary you need to divide the salary by 10 and then multiply by 12. For example, a teacher being paid $71,000 a year is making the same monthly salary as a 12 month employee who is paid $85,200 a year.

One interesting fact is that the highest paid principal, Noah Rogers, is paid $137,636 – more than some regional superintendents and more than twice as much as the principals on the lower end of the pay scale at $68,676.

Rogers, the principal at Smith High School, as reported in this newspaper, has a doctorate from Madison University in Gulfport, Mississippi. Madison University is not associated with James Madison University, a highly respected institute of higher learning, but is what is commonly known as a diploma mill. Generally, you pay a fee, turn in a paper of some kind and get a diploma. Madison is not accredited, and the Better Business Bureau gives it an F rating.

The school system says that Rogers' salary is not based on that degree, but principals with doctorates from legitimate, accredited universities who actually had to go to class and write a real dissertation are paid far less than Rogers. It's an interesting way to run a school system.

    $71,000/year is $71,000/year. If a Realtor sells a house and makes $10000 for 10 months his salary is not $120,000 especially if for 2 months out of the year he's not selling houses.

    Paltry Teacher's Salary

    I love my teaching job and I work hard to meet the needs of my students and their families, regularly working in excess of 50 hours a week (between time spent at school and at home) but guess what? My name isn't on the "Big Money" list of GCS employees! So, it really galls me to hear people say that teachers have it so easy because they only have to work from 8-3 and have 2 months off during the summer! Most people have no idea how much time and personal money teachers spend on their students. It would be so nice to be appreciated for the job I do!

    I believe that any employee making over $60,000 a year does not need a raise. It should be given to the staff that does not make the big bucks!

    you guys are always trying to play the comparison game of teachers' salaries versus the "everyman's salary". "...to compare a teacher's salary to a 12 month salary you need to divide the salary by 10 and then multiply by 12..." give me a break! the truth of the matter is this, that teachers make the money over ten months but what they make annually is what it is, period. you compared 71,000 made in 10 months to 85,000 for 12, right? 85,000 divided by 12 is about 7,100 per month while 71,000 divided by 12 is around 5,900 monthly. do the math, that's 1,200 less monthly, 300 less weekly (4 week month), 10 less daily. also note that if a teacher is making this much money he or she is pretty near or in the twilight of their career. also, the salaries compared is in stark contrast to the hours that each faction puts in. in the private sector or almost any other career field for that matter at the end of the day the job stops, however teachers know they are looking at about 3 hours more, at the least, with lesson planning, parental phone calls, and grading assignments but are not getting paid for it (at least in other career fields there is overtime), and dont forget teachers are doing this and more for YOUR CHILDREN. so please stop cryin' the blues about educators. dont forget it was these same educators who taught you how to read, write, compute, reseach, and to think critically about issues and look how you are using the skill sets taught to you..its such a shame.

    How can you say that a teacher's 10 month salary is the same as a 12 month salary? Teachers get paid their salary over 10 months - period. So, if I get 50,000/10 months in a calendar year, that is all I get for the year from the school system. So, to compare my salary correctly to a 12 month salary, you must consider that I do not get paid for two months of the year. So, I either have to get another job during the summer (which many must do) or set aside some of my monthly income for summer bills. So, although I get $5000/month (no taxes taken out) during the school year, I really only have $4167. $50,000/year is $50,000/year - period.
