"I'm very interested in the farmers' connection with area universities and the effort to teach students farming," Tuck said.

"A lot of people take soil and water for granted," he said. "These are God's creations and God's gifts to man. We are supposed to protect it no matter what."

Like Briggs, Tuck ran for a soil and water board seat in 2010.

"I ran last time and 4,000 people voted for me," he said.

He said he's trying to advance his candidacy through the connections at church and through other people he knows.

He said he realizes this is a non-partisan race, but he added that he'd like voters to know he's a "moderate Republican."

He said African-American Republicans are something of a rarity these days and he feels he could be a helpful voice on the soil and water preservation board.
