Not to necro, but people are too divided here... Some, like Card, are just looking at the *classic* Christian perspective, while others are looking at marriage as a social institution... The problem is marriage is both, but even in its modern form it evolved directly out of ancient judeo-christian dogma. The very language of marriage implies classical Christian values... My opinion is let the "gays are sinner's" people keep marriage, and lobby for an equally socially binding institution for people who don't want to be "joined" beneath "a Christian god" -Hell, I'm hetero and I'd probably prefer that! And here is a perfectly rational thing which respects everybody's "rights" and "institutions"... I hate to agree in any way with Card and the like, but the rabid snapping at Christian marriage is nothing but what it sounds like: revenge against people who don't like you.
So much hypocrisy in the world...
